Autumn 1 2023

Year 6 Grafham Water Trip September 2023

This half term, our topic will be World War One. In English, we will be exploring war poetry and stories linked to this theme. We will also be writing narratives based on the animated video 'The Piano'. In Maths, we will begin by reading, writing, comparing, and ordering numbers to ten million, before moving on to using these skills to explore number and the four operations. In Science, we are learning all about electricity and circuits and we will use these new-found skills and knowledge to support us in creating security alarm systems for trenches in DT later in the term. Working as historians, we will be learning about World War One and uncovering the causes of war, key battles, life in the trenches and technologies that were used during this period. We will also be thinking about the impact of the First World War on our local area and studying the life of George Clare. In RE, we will be furthering our learning from Year 5 and will continue to learn about Judaism. This term, we will be making links and comparing stories between different religions, particularly Judaism and Christianity. Our PE days will be Wednesdays and Fridays, and during this time, we will be learning about the skills needed for both dance and rugby.

Summer 2 2023

This half-term, we will continue to learn about Fair Trade and how this impacts people around the world. In Maths, children will be planning and developing products or services to sell to raise money for the Fairtrade Foundation and, as part of this project, children will be required to find the cost of raw materials, budget appropriately, conduct market research and calculate profit. In English, we will be continuing to write a range of texts from different genres, before moving on to writing play scripts based on Shakespeare’s plays towards the end of this term. In Science, we will be learning about the human body and will begin by exploring the circulatory system before moving on to exploring what can affect the health of humans. In RE, we will be continuing to learn about Islam and exploring what prayer means to Muslims. Through our PSHE work, we will be preparing for secondary transition by learning strategies to cope with loss and change. Music this term will be taught during our rehearsals for our production. Our PE day this term will be on Friday and children will have swimming lessons on Tuesday (6C) and Thursday (6R). Please ensure children have kits with them on these days.

Summer 1 2023

Pupils in Year 6 will be taking part in KS2 SATs tests from Tuesday 9th to Friday 12th May. Please ensure your children are in school on those days. This half term, the children in Year 6 will be focusing on the topic ‘Fair Trade’. In English, we will be reading the book ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’. We will be using this text to inspire our own narrative stories. In Maths, we will continue our work on the four operations alongside work on word problems, statistics and algebra. Our Science topic will be ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ and we will be discovering how scientists classify animals. Our DT unit of work will link to our Fair Trade topic, where the children will be cooking using fair trade ingredients. In RE we will be learning about Islam, and the role prayer has for Muslims. During Computing we will be learning about website design. PE days will continue to be a Thursday and Friday. Our topic in PE is athletics, with a focus on getting prepared for Sports’ Day and the events in a decathlon. Swimming sessions will start week beginning 22nd May. In PSHE, pupils will be taught lessons on Relationships and Sex Education. Please refer to your letter from earlier this week regarding this learning.

Spring 2 2023

This half term, the children in Year 6 will continue their topic on the Victorians and Trade. Using the story ‘Street Child’, based on the real life story of Jim Jarvis, we will be writing recounts and narratives. In maths, we will continue our work on the four operations alongside work on ratio, the properties of shape and position and direction. In science, we will be continuing our work on Evolution, including researching Mary Anning and exploring how fossils are used to support research on evolution. Our D.T. unit of work will link to our Victorians and Trade topic, where the children will be making vehicles to transport goods in Victorian times. Our R.E. focus will be on Christianity and how the Bible supports Christians to follow their moral compass. P.S.H.E. will enable us to learning about money and how to save and budget appropriately. We will be using Excel in computing to explore how to use a spreadsheet including inputting formulas. In P.E., our topics are tennis and gymnastics. P.E. days will continue to be a Thursday and Friday.

Spring 1 2023

This half term, the children in Year 6 will begin their topic on the Victorians. Using an adapted version of Oliver Twist, we will be focusing on discussion texts and journalistic writing. In maths, we will continue our work on the four operations before moving on to measures including mass and time. In science, we will be learning about Evolution and Inheritance, including researching Charles Darwin and exploring how humans have evolved. Our art unit of work will link to our Victorians topic, focusing on William Morris designs and perspective drawings of a Victorian scene. Our RE focus will be on Christianity as well as looking at Humanism. PSHE will enable us to explore our rights and consider our responsibilities as a child. We will be using ‘micro:bits’ in computing to explore coding and programming. In PE, our topics are hockey and gymnastics. PE days will continue to be a Thursday and Friday.

Autumn 2 2022

This half term, we will continue learning about The World Wars and will focus more of our attention on World War 2. In English, we will begin by writing narratives from different characters' perspectives using our Guided Reading text, "Private Peaceful" by Michael Morpurgo. We will then be reading "Goodnight Mr. Tom" by Michelle Magorian and writing historical narratives and explanation texts based on this. In History, we will be learning about World War Two; continuing to work as historians to uncover the causes of war, key events, technologies that were used during this period and the impact of war on different people. In DT we will be designing and making World War 1 trenches with alarm systems. In Maths, we will be securing our fractions knowledge and will be learning to add and subtract fractions, before moving on to look at decimals. We will then be applying this knowledge when learning about length and how to convert from one measurement to another. In RE, we will be continuing to learn about Judaism. This term, our key question is: "What is more important: what you say or what you do?"" and we will be using religious stories to support us with answering this question. PE continues on Thursdays and Fridays and during this time, we will be learning about the skills needed for both circuits and orienteering. In Science, we are learning all about light and how we use this to see.

Summer 1 2022

Pupils in Year 6 will be taking part in KS2 SATs tests from Monday 9th to Thursday 12th April. Please ensure your children are in school on those days. We are pleased to let you know that we will be putting on a Year 6 production of The Lion King this term. In Music, we will be practising songs to prepare for the performance.

PE days will be on Mondays and Thursdays and our topic will be athletics this half term. Our Science topic will be ‘Living Things and their Habitats’. In RE we will be learning about Islam, and the role prayer has for Muslims.

In Art we will be creating artwork in the style of Andy Warhol. In Computing we will be learning about website design. Pupils will continue to learn French on a weekly basis. In PSHE, pupils will be taught lessons on Relationships and Sex Education. Please refer to your letter from earlier this week regarding this learning.

 

Spring 2 2022

This half term, pupils in Year 6 will continue their topic of Victorians and Trade, which will include a Victorian Day experience at Stibbington. In History, we will be learning about how the Victorians changed Britain and in Geography, we will be learning how world resources are distributed and thinking about how trade developed in Victorian Britain. In Guided Reading, we are continuing to read Street Child and will also be using this text in English to support writing narratives. In Maths, we will begin by learning how to calculate area, perimeter and volume and will then learn how to solve problems involving geometry and statistics. 

Design Technology will focus on designing and creating food for a Victorian banquet using seasonal fruits and vegetables and in Art, we will create Lowry-inspired Victorian street scenes and replicate William Morris designs and find out how artists create depth within their work. 

In Science, we will be learning about Evolution and Inheritance and will investigate how species change over a long time. In RE, we will be focusing on Humanism and comparing Humanist beliefs to those of Christians. Our PE topics will be gymnastics and tennis, with PE days on Monday and Friday afternoons. In Computing, we will be using Microsoft Excel to create spreadsheets and, in PSHE, we will be learning how to make informed choices about money. 

 

Spring 1 2022

This half term, pupils in Year 6 will begin their topic of Victorians and Trade, which will include a Victorian Day experience. In Guided Reading, our texts will be set in the Victorian era, including Street Child, and an adapted version of Oliver Twist. In English, we will be focusing on discussion texts and journalistic writing, again with links to the Victorian topic. Design Technology will focus on a Victorian menu, with Art focused around our topic, including William Morris designs.

In Science, we will be learning about Evolution and Inheritance which will include learning about fossils. R.E. will be focused on Christianity as well as looking at Humanism. Our P.E. topics will be gymnastics and hockey, with P.E. days on Monday afternoons. Computing, Music and French lessons will continue to take place weekly. Our PSHE topic will be focused on Citizenship, considering rights and responsibilities.

Autumn 2 2021

This half term, we will continue learning about The World Wars and will focus on World War Two. In English, we will begin by writing narratives from different characters' perspectives using our Guided Reading text, ‘Private Peaceful’ by Michael Morpurgo. We will then be reading "Goodnight Mr. Tom" by Michelle Magorian and writing historical narratives and explanation texts based on this.

In Maths, we will be securing our fractions knowledge and will be learning to add and subtract fractions, before moving on to multiplying pairs of fractions and dividing fractions by whole numbers. In Science, we are learning all about light and how we use this to see. In History, we will be learning about World War Two; continuing to work as historians to uncover the causes of war, key events, technologies that were used during this period and the impact of war on different people.

In RE, we will be continuing to learn about Judaism. This term, our key question is: "What is more important: what you say or what you do?"" and we will be using religious stories to support us with answering this question. This year, our PE day will be Monday and during this time, we will be learning about the skills needed for both circuits and orienteering.

Autumn 1 2021

This half term, our topic will be World War One. In History, we will be learning about World War One; working as historians to uncover the causes of war, key battles, life in the trenches and technologies that were used during this period. We will also be thinking about the impact of the First World War on our local area and have made links with Chatteris Museum to support us with this.

In RE, we will be furthering our learning from Year 5 and will continue to learn about Judaism. This term, we will be making links and comparing stories between different religions, particularly Judaism and Christianity. This year, our PE day will be Monday and during this time, we will be learning about the skills needed for both dance and rugby.
