                                         Phonics

Phonics at Kingsfield Primary School.

At Kingsfield we teach phonics daily in Pre-school through to Year 2. We use the DFE document Letters and Sounds to support our planning.

What is Letters and Sounds?

Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.

There are six overlapping phases. The table below is a summary based on the Letters and Sounds guidance for Practitioners and Teachers. For more detailed information, visit the Letters and Sounds website.

In addition to Letters and Sounds, Year 1 is also using the scheme ‘Letter Families’ to support the children in their run up to the Phonics screening, which takes place in June.

Some Helpful Websites

www.phonicsplay.co.uk  this website is used a lot by teachers and provides games that support reading and spelling.

www.jollylearning.co.uk  this website is used a lot in our Reception Classes. It puts all the sounds too familiar songs and actions, which help the children to say the letter sounds correctly.

Alphablocks is a very good program that shows the children how to segment and blend sounds together in order to make words. This can be found on Youtube.
