Year 1 went from cosy, fluffy chicks to chilly Polar explorers!
We continued to watch our feathery friends grow and change each day and saw how they develop wings and tail feathers. Some even tried to fly! On Friday we had to wave goodbye to Angela, Joy, Dave, Mark, Sue and Chester who had to go back to the farm and start to explore the wider world.
On Tuesday we had a visit from two Polar explorers – one from the 1930s and another from more modern times. They told us about the equipment that they had needed to take to the Polar regions on their expeditions and showed us the types of clothing they had to wear. It was fun to see and hear about their experiences. Our thanks go to the Cambridge Polar Institute and of course our explorers aka Mrs Stanbridge and Mrs O’Neill.

On Wednesday 59 excited children and 15 adults from Year 1 went to visit Wicken fen near Ely. After a safety chat we all went off in our groups to explore. We had three activities to complete - Pond dipping, bug hunting and natural art including making clay animals. Ms Mutter and I were pleased to see some great team work and co-operation going on as we worked - well done children!

It’s Pancake day!

Year 1 enjoyed learning about the religious tradition of Shrove Tuesday. We made pancakes, wrote instructions, made a tally of our favourite pancake toppings and at the end of the day had a fabulous pancake race! Everyone took part and were excellent sportsmen.

This week in Year 1 we have had some furry mice visitors (not real ones!). Hayley from the Wood Green charity came to teach us all about what animals need to live a long and happy life. She helped us choose the right size cage, bedding, food and toys for our little visitors. We learnt lots, thank you Hayley.

This week in Year 1 we have been busy watching the weather! Last week we had made rain gauges, so this week we were able to check the gauges and see how much rain had fallen. This week we used the anemometer to check the wind speed and then made colourful wind socks to check the wind direction. We hoped for snow all week but it never came!

In English we have all become authors and have wriiten a sequel to the book we have been studying by Jon Klassen - I want my hat back. Our versions are called I want my friend back and are all about friendship and forgiveness. We are very proud of what we have achieved as are our teachers who are particulary impressed by our punctuation, adjective use and the amount we have written.

In maths we have measured anything we could find using cubes, rulers, hands and even feet!

Finally in Art we have been learning to blend colours including tints and shades. We have learnt about the painter Kandinsky and have used our new colour mixing skills to create circle pictures in his style.

Year 1 will be walking to the church on 4th October as part of our RE learning. On this day please make sure that your child has a coat and suitable footwear. Drop off and pick up times are as usual and we will be in school for lunch.

Thanks

Year 1 Team
