As you can see from the photos, this half term's D.T. projects are now well underway across Key Stage Two. The children have been designing, creating and evaluating across the school and are producing some wonderful products.

Year Three

The Year Three children have started to create felt Christmas decorations. The children have planned their ideas out in pencil and have cut shapes into the felt. The children are beginning to sew, stuff and decorate their designs. These will be finished with a ribbon so that they can be hung on a Christmas tree.

Year Four

The children in Year Four are making cushions out of felt with an applique design sewn on top. First, they looked at where applique comes from and examples of applique in history before considering form, function and aesthetics of a design. Next, the children created their designs after deciding who they were going to make their cushions for. Over the last two weeks, the children have been practising their running stitch, overcast and backstitch before carefully drawing and cutting out pieces of felt using their original designs to guide them. Many children have now started to sew their pieces onto the front of their cushion. We are looking forward to see their finished work!

Year Five

Year Five have been exploring cam mechanisms and where they are used in real life. They have then designed their own cam toys ready for our DT day. To plan their cam toys they went and spoke to children in Year One and Two. They asked a range of questions and created designs based on the answers they received. During our DT day the children will use a range of materials to create their cam mechanism in order to make their toy move. Once the toys are created, they will be taken to the children in Year One and Two to share their finished product. The children are excited to create and share their cam toys!

Year Six

Year Six have been working on designing and creating a water wall for our Reception children to use in their outdoor area. Reception children came down last week to answer some questions so the children knew what designs the children would like. They were great in answering all of the questions. Following on, this week, the children have designed our Water Walls in preparation for building them next week.

The children in Key Stage One will be spending a whole day on their cookery projects in the final two weeks so please do look out for an update on these in future news.
